Tanama: The Haitian Environmental Shero

A comic book and educational storytelling initiative inspiring children to protect nature, honor their culture, and believe in their own power.

WHO IS TANAMA?

Tanama is a Haitian environmental shero created by Anthony “Thony Loui” Louis-Jeune and Spider Whale Studio. Rooted in Haitian culture, Afro-Caribbean imagination, and the power of nature, Tanama was created to inspire a new generation through comics, art, education, and community action.

She is more than a superhero. She is a symbol of courage, cultural pride, environmental stewardship, and girl-centered leadership. Through her story, young people are invited to see themselves as protectors of the Earth and creators of a better future.

TANAMA’S STORY: BORN FROM NATURE,

FIGHTING FOR THE FUTURE

Rachelle awakens from a magical cocoon deep in the forest, discovering that her powers are connected to trees, ancestral knowledge, and the healing energy of nature. Reborn as Tanama, she rises to protect her homeland and restore balance in a world threatened by greed, destruction, and forces that seek to exploit the Earth.

Guided by ancestral spirits, ancient Taíno symbols, and the wisdom of women farmers, Tanama fights with more than strength. She fights with courage, memory, compassion, and the power of nature.

Tanama is deeply connected to forests, trees, and the natural world. Her story reflects the urgent need to protect the environment, restore damaged land, and teach young people that caring for nature is part of caring for humanity.

Tanama gives children, especially Black and Brown children, a heroic character rooted in Haitian and Afro-Caribbean identity. She shows young people that their culture, history, and imagination are powerful sources of strength.

Girls’ Leadership

Tanama centers the strength, wisdom, and leadership of girls and women. Her journey reminds young people that girls can be protectors, innovators, heroes, and leaders of change.
