Catherine Flon (1772–1831) sewed the first Haitian flag on May 18, 1803, stitching a symbol of unity from the torn French tricolor. In this illustration by Thony Loui, with creative guidance from Lilas Desquiron, Flon is depicted crafting the flag as Dessalines and Pétion enter, sunlight pouring in.
Featured in Haïti, un pays unique au monde, the image honors her lasting role in Haitian memory as a symbol of courage, womanhood, and national pride.
